Celebrating Malian Music: Barrel House, Devon
Come celebrate Malian music! Infectious drum rhythms, playful songs, and traditional and contemporary pan-African dance.
Denise Rowe, The Rubber Band featuring Iwan Kushka and Powerful Drums with Samuel Powerful Yeboah and company will be performing at the Barrel House. It will be an evening of Malian music performance and dance. All profits are going to Tamoudre, a local NGO working with Malian refugees and Oxfam. The event will be on 17 October . Doors open at 7:30pm and entry prices are £7/£6/£5.
Denis Rowe is a choreographer, dancer, movement artist, singer and mbira player with many years experience teaching traditional and contemporary pan-African dance. She is co-founder of Tolo Ko Tolo fusion dance company and principle dancer in Baka Beyond.
Iwan Kushka is a well travelled multi-instrumentalist with a passion for African music He studies the mbira with Zimbabwean master Chartwell Dutiro and is the founding member of the new duo Fana, as well as Omviviolum, the mbira orchestra. Iwan Kushka plays guitar, oud, ukele, Indian harmonium and world percussion.
Powerful Drums is an organization centred on African drumming, dance workshops and performances. Ayodele Scott from Sierra Leone and Samuel Powerful Yeboah from Ghana perform in a show called Tamaraneh, meaning ‘bringing together’ which bridges the gap between the audience and the performers. The audience will surely be encouraged to participate!
