Like most of the United Kingdom, last Friday I settled down to watch the Olympic Opening Ceremony. Director Danny Boyle made great use of music throughout and I thought it was heartening to hear a fairly diverse range of musical styles being incorporated, rather than a concentrated classical programme, as is so often the case at such high profile international events.

So what was your favourite tune included in the performance? Of course we heard a heavy smattering of pop and indie; The Beatles, Oasis, The Arctic Monkeys and so on. There was an Amy Winehouse tribute, a nod to hip-hop via Dizzee Rascal and Soul II Soul, and the haunting, gently pulsing electronica song 'Caliban's Dream' by Underworld that accompanied the torch lighting. But did you spot this swinging ragtime treat from Trinidad-born British pianist Winifred Atwell? Atwell was the first black musician to have a number one hit in the UK Singles Chart, and is still the only female instrumentalist to do so. Now that's something to celebrate! Enjoy...
