Win Tickets To The Endless Journey In Manchester 03/07!
Were you unsuccessful in our previous tickets competition to see The Endless Journey? Was Buckland Abbey not in your area or did you already have plans on the specified date? Fear not! WMN is giving away another two pairs of tickets, this time on the 3rd of July at the RNCM in Manchester. The performance is part of Manchester's We Face Forward Festival of West African Art & Music
Niger ensemble The Endless Journey is an amalgamation of four musicions from two of Niger’s most celebrated ensembles: Etran Finatawa (singer, guitarist and songwriter Alhouseini Anivolla and percussionist and singer Bamo Angonla) and Mamane Barka (nguruni virtuoso Mamane Barka and percussionist Oumarou Amadou). Both groups have had previous releases on the WMN labels. The full performance does however not just include music; specially mixed visuals projected behind the performers create a powerful and emotive live experience. The visuals are created by internationally acclaimed photographer and film-maker Jean Molitor whose newly-made documentary The Rolling Lesson is also celebrated in this project , as it discusses Niger’s political and social issues through The Endless Journey’s music.
Being cultural ambassadors from Niger with worldwide international performances for the last six years, it has become more and more apparent upon return home to each of the performers how the same traditions they present on the world stage are being rapidly lost with the younger generations. The Endless Journey recounts their role as musical activists at schools throughout Niger. Together, the four musicians' swirling strings, driving rhythms and haunting vocals evoke the vast open spaces of the desert and the very soul of nomadic life.
The ticket competition is now closed. The answer we were looking for was the Nguruni, although Mamane Barka is also well known as being the last remaining Biram master in the world! Congratulations to our winners!
