Kolpakov Duo’s charming double-guitar sound is firmly rooted in Romany tradition. Both musicians hail from Russia and their music reflects a vibrant gypsy culture that has triumphed in the face of adversity.
Both Alexander (Sacha) and Vadim Kolpakov were immersed in music from an early age. Alexander was born in 1943 in the Orenburg district of Russia and began to play the seven-string guitar as a boy. In the 1960s he moved to Moscow and became a well respected musician – many of his songs are now standards for the Russian repertoire.
Vadim is from the Saratov region and moved to Moscow in 1992 to train with his uncle. Together the duo have an un-canny connection, leaping from phrases in perfect timing and directing driving rhythms towards the same climactic point – it seems that music runs thick through the Kolpakov blood. The duo both learned their craft exclusively via the oral tradition, an approach that imbues their playing with a wholly natural flair. Their trademark sound is light and bouncing, less intense than much music in the same genre. Melancholic tracks feel reflective rather than dark. Romantic numbers featuring crunching sustained chords and wandering drawn-out melodies feature alongside more up-beat rhythmic numbers with strummed chords and dance-like figures.
The Kolpakov Duo have toured extensively, and were recruited by none other than Madonna to accompany her on tour after performing for her previously at her 2007 birthday party. The global tour took Kolpakov all over the world, an experience which both musicians treasure.
Revel in the layered textures of glittering gypsy-guitars, and uncover the wonderful Russian Romany culture with this striking digital release.
